The barn, built in 1940, was renovated in 2012 and converted into a multifunctional building.

 

One half of the building became an apartment, with 3 rooms, 2 bathrooms and a kitchen, which now functions as a guesthouse.

 

The other half has been transformed into a community and event space, with minimal renovation. We host concerts, exhibitions, conferences, and small weddings here.

 

During the renovation, we tried to preserve the original features of the building and place the new functions within them. We made small windows and few new openings on the ground floor (even the large patio door replaced the old garage door). On the first floor, however, a more serious compromise was inevitable regarding the windows and the chimney on the roof. At the same time, the windows placed on the gable of the roof were installed behind the original planking, so they are not visible from the outside.

 

One of our goals with the renovation was to encourage and give ideas to other barn owners not to demolish their built heritage (as is common today), but to use the large spaces of the barn for new functions. Since our intention is to help preserve the barns of Székelyföld, we are happy to show those interested what we have achieved and are happy to share our good and bad experiences. King Charles III was a guest of the barn in 2011. The purpose of his visit was to get to know the work we do within the framework of the Pogany-Havas Micro-Regional Association to preserve the natural and cultural values of the Csík and Gyimes. As this was Prince Charles’ first visit to the Csík Basin, the event received a great response, which allowed him to emphasize these values. The barn won two architectural awards in 2017 and in 2018.
